Banjska Stena

Banjska Stena is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Serbia and a symbol of Tara National Park and Western Serbia. The view from the 1,065-meter-high lookout point is breathtaking, taking in the Drina River canyon, Perućac Lake, and the surrounding mountains.

The lookout point is well-equipped for tourists, with a viewing platform, benches, and a telescope. However, be careful not to approach the edge of the precipice, as it can be dangerous.

The road from the center of Tara to Banjska Stena is 10 kilometers long and unpaved, so it is best to take an SUV if possible. The route can be impassable in winter due to snow, so taking a day trip to Tara during this time is not recommended.

The final kilometer of the hike to the viewpoint is through a beautiful forest along a well-marked and relatively flat path. The walk is enjoyable, and the views are worth the effort.

Raca Monastery

Manastir Rača, located near Bajina Bašta. It is a captivating Serbian Orthodox monastery with rich historical and cultural significance.

The origins of Manastir Rača is the 13th century when the Serbian king, Dragutin, founded it.

Visiting Manastir Rača offers a unique opportunity to experience Serbia's spiritual and cultural richness. And also beautiful surrounding landscapes.

Vrelo Restaurant, Waterfall, and Godina River in Perucac

Tara National Park is full of natural beauty, many right next to the main road. One such exciting location is right next to the main road next to the Drina River. In the small town of Perucac, near Bajina Basta, there is the shortest river in Serbia. It is exactly 365 meters long, which is why it is called the Godina (Year) River. You can walk to the waterfall from which it originates. But the main attraction is the waterfall where this river ends with its fall into the Drina River. This beautiful place also has a phenomenal restaurant that fits perfectly into this environment. If you don't have time for lunch, be sure to at least have a cup of coffee at one of the tables on the wooden platform above the waterfall itself.

Zelenika Viewpoint

The Zelenika lookout point is a well-arranged lookout viewpoint located right next to the road that goes up from Perućac to the Tara National Park tourist center. The view of the Drina River is not as attractive as the Banjska Stena viewpoint, but the Zelenika viewpoint is right next to the road and has a well-equipped parking lot. It's an unavoidable sightseeing stop on your day tour to Tara.

Zaovine Lake and Spajici Lake

Zaovine is a beautiful artificial lake not far from Mitrovac on Tara. It was created in 1975 by constructing a dam on the Beli Rzav River. The lake is 5 kilometers long and 1.5 kilometers wide. The maximum depth of the lake is 110 meters.

The water in the lake is clear and very clean. A lake is excellent for swimming, fishing, walking, and camping. It is surrounded by forests and the peaks of Tara Mountain and is one of the biggest attractions in the National Park. Immediately on the other side of the Dam, there is a viewpoint from which a beautiful view of a smaller lake named Spajići can be seen.

Tourist Center of Tara and Mitrovac

The center of Tara is not an exceptionally well-arranged tourist center like Zlatibor. It lacks cafes and restaurants. It is a simple place where you can get information about accommodation on Tara, buy souvenirs, or rent a quad bike. Also, many hiking trails leading through the forested areas of the national park lead from here. Mitrovac is located near the center, with the most significant number of holiday homes for rent.

Perucac Lake

Located in Perućac, upstream from the Vrelo restaurant, is the Bajina Bašta hydropower plant. It converts a portion of the fast-flowing mountain river, Drina, into a 54-kilometer-long lake known as Lake Perućac. This stunning lake extends through the impressive Drina river canyon. Close to the hydropower plant, you can rent floating houses and revel in the privacy of the gorgeous surrounding nature. The most thrilling boat tour in Serbia is from Perućac to Višegrad in Bosnia but be prepared for a day-long adventure.

Mokra Gora and Sargan Eight

We have already mentioned Mokra Gora and its main attractions - the Šargan Eight tourist train ride in the post about the most exciting places in Western Serbia. Although Mokra Gora is situated outside Tara National Park, the Šargan Eight Railway runs through some parts of the park. A private day trip to Mokra Gora is one of the most popular tours in Serbia for a reason.

What to see on the way from Belgrade to Tara?

On the way to Tara, you can take a break in an authentic Serbian town called Valjevo, and stop by the Lazareva Stena viewpoint not far from Valjevo. Continuing from Valjevo over the Debelo Brdo mountain, you can make several stops for photography, and the most beautiful place is the Kapija Podrinja viewpoint.

Further towards Tara is the House on the Drina, which is one of the most famous attractions in Western Serbia. It is located right at the entrance to the small town of Bajina Bašta, known for its brandy distilleries, which you can also visit. You can reach Tara from Belgrade by a slightly longer route if you want to stop at Zlatibor, the most developed mountain resort in Serbia, located not far from Tara.

How to get from Belgrade to Tara?

If you want to go on an excursion from Belgrade to Tara, do not rely on public transport such as buses and trains. And if it is possible to arrive this way with transfers, it would be an arduous ride considering that a good part of the over 200 kilometers-long road is a mountain road of poor quality. Also, in the national park, there are long distances between the places you need to visit, and it isn't easy to get a taxi in this rural and sparsely populated part of Serbia. That is why renting a car or hiring a limo service in Belgrade is the best solution for your trip.
